Digital media technologies
Esther Hammelburg researches the influence of digital media technologies in our society. She uses the concept of ‘hybrid realities’ to describe how our lifeworld -the way we see, understand, and navigate the world- is increasingly shaped by the intertwining of digital media and physical environments. Her mission is to raise awareness of this dynamic, creating space for individuals to make more conscious and autonomous choices.
In her opening keynote for MindLabs, Esther explores virtual humans from this perspective, offering a valuable conceptual framework for the day. She examines several domains in which virtual humans are playing – or will play – a role in our lives. Along the way, she shares her reflections on the personal, societal, ethical, and legal considerations that come with this development.
Esther is a senior lecturer at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and director of Society 5.0 Festival.
